What is the GTL?

The GTL is the automotive transport label standard (VDA 4994 in Germany, with matching Odette and AIAG recommendations) that is replacing older regional formats such as VDA 4902. Its core is the license plate: a Data Identifier 1J (single pack), 5J (mixed master) or 6J (homogeneous master), followed by the issuing agency code UN, the D-U-N-S company number and a serial, carried in Code 128. The DataMatrix holds part number, quantity, supplier and the other fields in ISO/IEC 15434 format.

FAQ

How big is a GTL label?

Mostly A5 (210×148 mm), with smaller variants such as A6. Anything wider than a typical 4-inch label printer (about 104 mm) needs a 6–8 inch label printer or a laser printer.

What is a D-U-N-S number?

The D-U-N-S number is the 9-digit company identifier issued by Dun & Bradstreet; the GTL license plate uses it to identify the company that issued the label.

Are there other automotive label templates?

The label designer also offers the VDA 4902 transport label (A5), the KLT small container label (210×74 mm) and the AIAG B-10 shipping label (100×150 mm), under “Automotive” on the start page.

Can I print this directly on my label printer?

Yes. The label designer supports Zebra, TSC, Brother, Epson, cab and more with native printer commands; GS1 and other barcodes are emitted module-exact so widths are precise. Direct printing needs the free Funcode print agent on Windows; without a label printer you can download a PDF and print on any printer.
